EVERY Parent NEEDS to Read This: “Why do you pay so much money for your kid to race BMX bikes”? Well I have a confession to make; By Steve Hulbert (And Originally MParks.org)

Steve Hulbert just posted this online, it is absolutely brilliant…

Screenshot 2016-04-06 19.26.29

One of my friends asked “Why do you pay so much money for your kid to race BMX bikes”? Well I have a confession to make; I don’t pay for my kid to race his bike. Personally, I couldn’t care less about bikes.

So, if I am not paying for bike racing, what am I paying for?

– I pay for those moments when my son becomes so tired he wants to quit but doesn’t.

– I pay for those days when my son comes home from school and is “too tired” to go to the track but goes anyway.

– I pay for my son to learn to be disciplined, focused, and dedicated.

– I pay for my son to learn to take care of his body and equipment.

– I pay for my son to learn to work with others and to be good team mates, gracious in defeat, and humble in success.

– I pay for my son to learn to deal with disappointment, when he doesn’t get that win he’d hoped for, but he goes back week after week giving it his best shot.

– I pay for my son to learn to make and accomplish goals.

– I pay for my son to respect, not only themselves, but other riders, officials and coaches.

– I pay for my son to learn that it takes hours and hours, years and years, of hard work and practice to create a champion and that success does not happen overnight.

– I pay for my son to be proud of small achievements, and to work towards long term goals.

– I pay for the opportunity my son has and will have to make life-long friendships, create lifelong memories, to be as proud of their achievements as I am.

– I pay so that my son can be out on the track instead of in front of a screen…

…I could go on but, to be short, I don’t pay for bike racing; I pay for the opportunities that BMX provides my son with to develop attributes that will serve him well throughout his life and give him the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment! (Adapted)

Think about this parents… Thanks for writing this Steve, it seriously could not have been worded any better. We would love to host you & your son at our facility any time you are in Minneapolis. Ride on ! #bmxfamily

UPDATE Dec 2017: We just got word that this is actually based off an original post here thanks to John McLean:

The Factory is “Life Changing”. February 1st, 2016. Today is our 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY. HUGE THANK YOU from The Factory

THE-FACTORY-5-YEAR-ANNIVERSARY

Today is the day! Look at that photo from 5 years ago! Without your support this wouldn’t have been possible… 5 years ago on this exact same day, February 1st, 2011 Minnesota BMX riders Evan Moyle and Dustin Grice found and placed the first few steps into our warehouse in Minneapolis. They signed the very first lease for our own indoor riding facility.

The idea was simple, run it like a 24 hour fitness. Unlike any other skatepark ever, give riders 24/7 keyholder access for a simple $100/month. And that exact same idea and cost has never changed. Little did we know that it would start to become one of Minnesota’s longest running indoor parks, and completely change park riding around our scene cranking out some of the world’s most talented riders of all ages.

It has taken us a long time to piece this facility together outside of working our normal full time jobs, however by now we’re sure you have noticed the drive of the place and the forward direction that everything has moved since the first ramp we built in The Factory out of OSB/chipwood. lol We are working our hardest to continuously improve the overall experience & sustainability of The Factory, everything from the facility itself, the ramps, the overall look & paint, lighting, leaks, cleanliness, friendliness, our events, our shows, our website, payment options, convenience, email newsletters, social media Facebook & Instagram, filming, editing YouTube videos, graphics, t-shirts, stickers, photography, instructors, lessons, birthday parties, rental bikes, helmets & pads, maintaining relationships with our neighbors, sponsors, events, liability waivers, insurance, taxes, dealing with issues in general… Even drama! lol it’s unreal There are just so many different things that go into this place that most people have no idea or even think about. It has taken us a very long time to dial everything in & we thank you for your patience as we continue working our other full time jobs like normal and then simply riding bikes for fun in the evenings at our little side project hobby facility in Minneapolis. That should give you a real good idea of how this place has evolved.

Right now is the absolute best time that anyone has ever had to ride The Factory, please take advantage of it. It is “Life Changing”. That is the only way many of the keyholders & families can describe it. HUGE THANK YOU to our very first members, builders, parents & families, kids, all riders, events & sponsors, visitors from out of town, you have all a part of something very, very special. We can’t wait to see what happens these next 5 years… Today marks the very first day of Year 6.

Thank you again so much, we look forward to seeing you soon, and announcing our 5 year anniversary Open House party date this spring!

What a ride this has been.

New Summer Hours, or should we say No Summer Hours: 24/7 Keyholder Membership Required or Schedule a Session to Ride This Summer

For the rest of the summer we’re doing what most indoor skateparks do to help stay in business during the summer & cut back on expenses while everyone is riding outside. We will be putting our normal public skatepark hours on the weekends on hold for the rest of the summer, however the Factory is still open 24/7 for all of our keyholders just like it has been since day 1, for almost 4 years now. Their claim is to have the largest jump in the industry, giving riders airtime to attempt dangerous trick at perilous heights. In addition, the show offers give-aways, including new bicycles.

The event will also host the Strider Bike National Championship. Strider Sports International, the world’s leading manufacturer and marketer of children’s no-pedal balance bikes, hosts the Strider Championship Race in St. Cloud, presented by Scheel’s and the St. Cloud Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau on Saturday, July 12th from 9am-3pm. Children of all sizes and skill levels are welcome to participate. STRIDER No-Pedal Balance Bikes are developed for both learning the ropes of riding and honing advanced skills in racing.

About the Downtown Walk About

The Walk About is part of the international “Open Streets” movement hosted by the St. Cloud Downtown Council. These events typically involve the temporary closing of the streets or, rather, opening up of selected streets to motor vehicle traffic, making them available to all non-motorized transportation and people of all abilities.  With key messages and strategic execution, open streets events can be a powerfully persuasive experience that invites the public to re-imagine the streets as not just a place for motor vehicles, but a place for people.  The 5K Fun Run (no registration or experience necessary) starts at Brother’s Bar & Grille on 5th Avenue at 9:00 am.  All other Walk About activities, over 80, are between noon – 4pm throughout Downtown.  Ride your bikes to the event and take in all of that is happening throughout the day.”
